Policy
- In September 2023, the UK Prime Minister announced delays to the proposed ban on ICE vehicles to 2035 (from 2030 before; see more). The rationale behind this was: 1) EV penetration growth appears robust regardless of a policy mandate; 2) charging infrastructure may still be lacking; 3) BEVs may still not be affordable for some consumers. While we await further details, we see this decision being negative for the battery sector given the potential for loosening of battery demand/supply. If this were to spread across other EU countries, that could further dampen EV battery market sentiment and begin to more materially swing the bargaining power pendulum from the battery makers to the auto OEMs.
